Japanese car major, Toyota Motor launched the new generation Innova MPV named as the new Innova Crysta in India in May this year. As was expected, the all new Toyota Innova Crysta went on to become a smashing hit owing to stunning new design and all over premium quality and improvements. The Crysta is certainly a premium MPV, but is built to impress and lure in SUV buyers as well and thus, the Innova Crysta’s arrival has dampened the sales of quite some popular SUVs in India.

On the other hand, India’s own auto giant, Tata Motors is preparing to launch the much awaited Hexa soon in the home market.  The Tata Hexa was first showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo and gained huge attention for its excellent aggressive new design language and premium quality. Although the Hexa crossover is based on the Tata Aria, which it will be replacing after launch, the Hexa’s extensive improvements make it an all-new vehicle. The Hexa’s head-turning looks and superior quality comes from the inputs from Jaguar Land Rover, which is owned by Tata Motors.

Now, is the new stunning new Toyota Innova Crysta has anything to fear, it is the upcoming new Tata Hexa crossover. The fight of these two vehicles is expected to be epic. Styling is very important for the success of a vehicle model, and Tata Motors has worked wonderfully to ensure that its upcoming Hexa is a thorough charmer. The Tata Hexa is much more aggressive and premium looking than the Aria. The muscular crossover/SUV flaunts large sporty headlights projector units along with LED DRLs, highly stylized piano black front grille with chrome borders, beefy front bumper, very uniquely shaped twin fog lights, dual air-dams on both sides of the lower bumper with an air intake in the middle. Its side profile is equally aggressive and classy with side body cladding, large wheel arches and very sophisticated looking bears dual-tone five twin spoke alloy wheels. At the back, the Hexa flaunts stylish wrapped around tail lights, roof spoiler and sleek dual exhaust tips.

On the other hand, the Toyota Innova Crysta also comes in an all new muscular and premium design that is different than its predecessor. It flaunts a large hexagonal grille with dual chrome slats at the top, new sharp sweptback headlights with projector lamps with integrated LEDs and stylish fog lamps. Its side profile is very muscular with a flared rear fender, sharp crease on its beltline along with chrome lining, massive wheel arches and attractive 5-spoke alloy wheels. The MPV’s rear flaunts integrated roof spoiler and eye-catching inverted L-shaped stretchy tail lights.

The Tata Hexa being a crossover gets a boxier design than the curvy Toyota Innova Crysta. The Hexa is longer and wider than the Innova Crysta, while the latter is slightly taller. The Hexa is 4,788 mm long, 1,903 mm wide and 1,791 mm tall with a wheelbase measuring 2,850 mm. The Innova Crysta is 4,735 mm long, 1,830 mm wide and 1,795 mm high and sits on a wheelbase measuring 2,750 mm.

The Hexa’s longer wheelbase along with larger dimensions will ensure a more spacious cabin.

The Innova Crysta has an impressive premium cabin sporting many alluring features including dual analog dial and a TFT display, multi-functional steering wheel, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, stylish dashboard with classy wooden trims, pushbutton start/stop, front seat arm rest, foldable tables, cup holders, arm rests for the middle row, roof illumination system with ambient lighting and much more. The cabin is also exceedingly pleasant and airy owing to large glass area.

The Hexa also offers superb premium interiors with great quality materials and impressive fit and finish. The crossover will offer an array of premium equipments including dual pod instrument cluster with TFT display, height adjustable multi-function steering wheel, a touchscreen infotainment system, 6 captain seats, ambient lighting with 8 different lighting options. The Tata Hexa shares its engine with the Safari Storme. Thus, it packs in the same 2.2 liter 4 cylinder VARICOR diesel motor mated to a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed automatic transmission choice. The diesel mill pumps out 156.33 PS of power and 400 Nm of torque. The crossover offers 4 different driving modes – Comfort, Automatic, Dynamic and Rough Road. The Hexa is expected to offer a mileage of 13kmpl.

The Toyota Innova Crysta comes with an engine range of two diesel and one petrol units. The Crysta Diesel packs in the new GD family of engines. The 2.4 liter DOHC 4-cylinder diesel unit comes coupled with a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox and delivers 150 PS and 343 Nm, while the 2.8 liter DOHC mill that is paired with a 6 speed automatic transmission offers 174 PS and 360 Nm. The Crysta Petrol packs in a 2.7-liter mill offering 164 bhp and 250 Nm. The Innova Crysta offers two driving modes of Eco and Power.

The Innova Crysta has a price ranging of Rs. 13.83 – 20.78 lakhs. The upcoming Tata Hexa is likely to have a more affordable price range of around Rs. 12 – 18 lakhs.

The Toyota Innova Crysta and the Tata Hexa are certainly going to be very tough competitors, as both the models are equally aggressive looking and premium in terms of quality and features. While the Crysta offers more seating capacity and a wide range of engines, the Hexa offers better space and more features. The Tata Hexa is expected to nail it with its lower price range while being a larger vehicle. The Hexa is also certainly the best looking crossover than India has seen so far. Now, it remains to be seen which brand power (Toyota or Tata) wins the race.
